Raspberry Jam
(cont.)
Fans of Raspberry JAM have expressed their gratitude
with words like: "You do the work of our Lord in a truly unique
way" (Leah, Kansas), and "It has helped me so much in my
Christian faith" (Michelle, Rhode Island). Reactions like these
are continually arising throughout the Christian underground because
RBJ is personally in touch with their fans while remaining humble
and direct in their walk with the Lord. Like a treasured secret, the
music of Raspberry JAM reaches people on a personal level which is
shared only with friends you care about. "We hope the music of
Raspberry JAM creates a space for God to speak to an alternative
generation in a fresh, creative and honest way" says
singer/guitarist Phillip Kim. "Oceanic will be very different
for a lot of people since it is so personal and musically emotional,
but I think the honesty of the album will be understood and
embraced. It's the reality of God for me in the best way I can
express it, through my personal life."
Oceanic is Raspberry Jam's second release on Metro One and promises to give alternative rock fans what they have been waiting for musically and spiritually. The musical style of the band has gradually evolved since their first album, CHI-RHO, from a funk/groove vibe to an emotional, intense honesty. "It may seem the change was instantaneous, but it was a long process," says bassist Herb Grimaud. "There were personal, internal changes going on with the band members that were being reflected in the new music we were writing. The new material is stronger and more passionate. I guess it could be compared to 'Love Eternal' and 'Brilliant Fervor' from our first album." Though it may be hard to recognize the band's new musical stylings, the heart for God rings passionately consistent through both albums.
The band originated in Southern California during a time when the alternative scene was just making way. Later labeled the Third Wave, the scene from which Raspberry JAM was born also gave birth to the violet burning and the prayer chain, bands that have also gone on to make their mark. It was in this time that two musicians, Herb Grimaud on bass and Wes Faulk on drums, decided to jam. They soon enlisted guitarist Flames (known best for his handlebar-mustache and his time with the band Cafe' Noire) and singer/guitarist Phillip Kim, music businessman extraordinare. Four guys with extremely dissimilar tastes in music came together to combine these flavorful backgrounds into what is known as Raspberry JAM. This widely unique creation allowed these guys, who were just looking for a fun expressive outlet, to celebrate the Lord in their own amusing, noisy way.
Along with their new album, they have a new co-lead singer, Destiny! This engaging vocalist came to Raspberry JAM with constant hair-color changes and experience in local bands and studio background. Destiny was drawn to the band's ministry goals and heart for evangelism. "I feel that music isn't just performing and entertaining, or making a name for yourself in the Christian industry. It is to share and spread the Word of Jesus Christ to audiences of Christians and non-Christians alike. A lot of bands have the mentality to gain success and money, yet they have no ministry goal. No matter who you are or what you do as a Christian, your life is a ministry."
