Album Reviews
At its best, Rose Blossom Punch's debut album,
Ephemere,
is a tight collection of powerful post-grunge, highlighted
by the group's edgy, hard-driving sound. The band has
trouble writing catchy hooks, but they are more about sound
than content, and on that level,
Ephemere
succeeds reasonably well. If the group develops its
songwriting skills, they would be more memorable, but as it
stands,
Ephemere
is a good, workmanlike collection of post-grunge.

RBP is in essence an alternative rock group, but they
have a unique sound that’s hard to describe. Part of that
is due to Aaron Sprinkle’s vocals, but the music itself
has a unique quality to it also. It is that individuality
that makes this album stand out as much as it does; this
is not just another alternative band. The lyrics are
artistic with meanings that can be hard to grasp at
times, which makes the listener want to hear it over and
over so as to contemplate the message again. This is
music that I can concentrate on or just play in the
background while I work or think on other things. The
guitars are harsh and soothing at the same time and
everything flows together well.
It’s hard to
think of any high points on this one. This is because
nearly the entire album is a continual high point. I tend
to play Haunted Church and Hot Rod Horse the most when I
DJ, but I would be willing to play pretty much any of
them.
The only song I
don’t like all that much is Beauty; the production and
style just didn’t seem to come together like they did on
the others. The song is a slow and very distorted, which
is not necessarily a bad thing, but it just didn't work
for this tune.
The little lyric
card included was annoying. If there were an extra fold
in the CD sleeve to keep the card from sliding out it
might not be so bad, but as it is that card is just too
easily lost. I laminated mine with enough around the
edges to hold it in the case on its own. It’s as if the
lyrics were thrown in as an afterthought, but my
suggestion is next time at least make it a sleeve-sized
card. I would, however, rather have this annoying little
card than no lyrics at all.
Poor packaging
or not I highly recommend this album to anyone that likes
alternative music. Even if you don’t like complicated
lyrics, you will like the music. If you want to get an
idea of what this group sounds like check out Based On A
True Story on the first HM sampler (back in ’97) and also
on Take Time To Listen Vol 3, and the two songs on the
Art Core samplers put out by Tooth & Nail. None of these
songs are on the album. I haven’t heard the second Art
Core song yet, but I love the other 2 I've mentioned.
Neither of them sounds exactly like the songs on the
album, but they are a good example of the quality of
music and they are close enough to be easily
distinguishable as RBP.
