Album Reviews
The Beautiful Mistake blends amazing heavy and acoustic
guitars, bellowing lyrics, and spot on drumming to
accomplish a new standard for fans of intelligent and
multi-layered rock. Fans of Indie music and emo rock are
going to be thrilled by this CD. Fans of bands like
Thursday and Further Seems Forever are going to have a
new favorite band.
Amongst a genre ridden with garbage, The Beautiful
Mistake demonstrates the talent and natural ability to
compose music that can appeal to a wide range of
listeners. The mix is crystal clear, enhancing the
dramatic effects the light acoustics produce among a
barrage of distortion. The result is a euphoric mind
trip, one that focuses on the beauty of the melodies, and
raw aggression that stems from power and smooth tempo
changes. The band goes far beyond the standard rock quota
of just a few good songs and nothing more; each song is
unique and every song can be enjoyed for months and
months. "Silence" has an exceptionally memorable chorus,
while "Light a Match" as well as every other song is done
in such a great way, that someone who never really cared
for Indie can easily be drawn in. To write a mellow song
is a considerable task on its own, but to add a hardcore
element in and make it work is astonishing.
There can be no mistake, this album is a must have. At
the very least, it's a must to listen to. I never thought
I would be this pleasantly surprised. There needs to be
more promotion on this, I had no idea who these guys
were, and would have never even thought to buy this. At
least there are some pleasant surprises still in music.

Indie rockers The Beautiful Mistake are neither beautiful
nor a mistake. They’re attractive yet generally not at
fault. Their ambitious hard rock-pop is well played, but
feels familiar. Co-vocalists Josh Hagquist and Shawn
Grovers’ pained screams sound curiously calculated to
serve the song rather than based on true rage. That
said, the extremely dark “Stabbing Backwards,” a song
completely filled with pain, rejoices in the final line
“And I will rise above you.” The sorrow continues in the
mellow and melodic “Circular Parade”. With lines like
“It binds my heart. It blinds my eyes so I give in. I
don’t want this anymore. You’re in my circular parade of
failure,” it is clear The Beautiful Mistake have their
issues. The pride of Riverside, CA, The Beautiful
Mistake recorded Light a Match... with Ed Rose at
Red House Studios in Kansas maximizing his ability to
make them sound like an angrier Get Up Kids, whom he also
produced. With striking lyrics, I wish their production
didn’t sound so produced.

As trendy and
radio-savvy as this cd is, it's absolutely amazing. It's
so melodic and beautiful, the vocalists' voices work
together well (despite the fact the layered vocals make
the album sound really overproduced). The Beautiful
Mistake is a mix of rock, emo and maybe very slight
post-hardcore. They remind me of maybe Juliana Theory,
Open Hand, Armor for Sleep and Thursday, with a lot of
production and guitars too heavy to label their music
"rock."
Light A Match,
For I Deserve To Burn transcends classification
well, and it's very obvious that the band's sound could
appeal to a multitude of fans. It's difficult to label an
album when they have moderately heavy yet melodic
instrumentals, screaming, and singing, and a strange
outlandish poppiness that amazingly enough, doesn't make
the album sound worse. Members of The Beautiful Mistake
use their talent to make extremely passionate, dynamic,
diverse music to appeal to any fans from hardcore to emo
to alternative.
