Album Review
This is easily one of the most overlooked albums to come
out since 2000. Our 4 star rating only adds to this
sentiment, as The Sound Of Summer Running probably
deserves all 5. It’s one of those albums that you don’t
love but you keep coming back to. The Sound Of Summer
Running is more accurately the sound of unapologetic and
profoundly articulate rocknroll. I hate the word
“alternative”. What’s alternative? If we ever got to the
bottom of it and had a conclusive definition, Canary
would be the alterative to alternative. Yes, it’s rock,
but it’s more than rock. Canary is about fiery, artistic
passion, and the canvas of choice uses their 4-piece to
challenge and provoke the listener to songs that are
brainier than “college prog-rock” and more intense than
the sweetiest emo bands.
I’ve had this album for so long and I still don’t have
the foggiest clue how to stylistically describe it. Jamey
Bozeman of Luxury fame is at the helm of Canary, yet
there are only slight resemblances of his former band
(led by brother Lee Bozeman). Canary is an injection to
the arm, while Luxury was a ballet.
The
Sound Of Summer Running is all muscle, yet it bleeds with
passion and sincerity. Like I said, you won’t be blown
off your feet by it, but you’ll still have it in regular
rotation 3 years from now. The most intimate moment heard
on this cleverly packaged CD is “End”, as Canary wipes
away the sweat and unplugs the guitars (even making way
for simple drum programming), drawing the record to
balanced close. Make room for Jamey. He’s about to take
over
